About Busan University of Foreign Studies

Office of International Affairs of Busan University of Foreign Studies is the core department for promoting the international exchange programs of the university. It promotes and manages sisterhood ties with foreign universities and high schools as well as governments and autonomous organizations, promotes mutual exchange between students and professors, attracts and manages international students.

As of 2023, our university has signed exchange agreements with 451 educational institutions in 56 countries to enhance internationalization capabilities through student exchanges and academic exchanges between professors.

In particular, Busan University of Foreign Studies is the best international university in Korea where 1,246 international students study together with Korean students. As of 2023, through the 2+2 overseas dual degree program and the 3+1 long-term math system program, sending students to 18 countries, 51 universities and returning to experience internationalization.

The internationalization capability of Busan University of Foreign Studies was evaluated as an excellent university in the field of internationalization in the ‘2024 Asian University Evaluation’ announced by ‘QS’, a global university evaluation organization in the UK. In particular, it received a perfect score (100 points) in the ‘Overseas Dispatched Students’ section, which was sent from Korea to abroad, and ranked 16th in Asia. It has been well received in the field of internationalization such as the above.

Based on these achievements, the Office of International Affairs is improving various work systems and systems to first create a ‘university that is good for international students to study’ in order to attract more international students. In addition to improving the work system for international students, we plan to improve the system and promote new programs to increase opportunities for our students to study abroad.

We will do our best to provide accurate information not only to our members but also to international students who wish to study at our university by posting the current status and data of various international exchange programs promoted by the university. Thank you.

International Foreign Language Studies
The objective of the Korean Studies is to provide students a deep understanding of Korea in various professions. In particular, this major helps foreign students to become Korean specialists who have in-dept insight into Korean culture, society, politics, economy, language, history, and social organization.

Major Subjects

International Relations of Korea, Korean Politics, Korean Culture, North Korean Studies, Cities and Regions of Korea etc.

Career Paths

With their focus on Korea, students are also encouraged to take related courses on China, Japan, and other international areas. Students of this major usually work as regional specialists on South and/or North Korea at international corporations and institutions at home and abroad.

Curriculum of Korean Studies

The major of EU studies provides students with the unique opportunity of developing expertise regarding the organizations and policies of the European Union and cultural, business, and political relations between East Asia and European countries.

Academic Leave of Absence • Return to School (휴.복학)

Students can apply for take a leave of absence when they want to take time off temporarily or apply for returning to school as the approved leave of absence duration expires

Application for Leave of Absence (휴학신청)

Students can apply for 2 semesters (1 year) at a time, and they can apply up to 4 times (4 years) including extension of leave of absence.

Application for Returning to School (복학신청)

Students whose leave of absence period has ended should apply for returning to school within the deadline, and if they do not return, they will be dis-enrolled.

※ It is recommended to apply for returning to school before opening the Registration Cart, as tuition payment and course

   registration are possible after the registration status has been changed to enrolled after applying for returning to school.

※ Extension of leave of absence: Students can apply for an extension while on a leave of absence, and they can apply

   online before the start of the semester (1st semester: July-August, 2nd semester: January-February). (Students can apply

   for an extension only once while attending school)

※ When returning to school, international students should complete visa issuance and alien registration again.

 Q. Is it possible to return to school early before the end of the leave period?

 A.    Yes. Early return to school is possible before the end of the leave of absence period. Students whose leave of absence period has ended should apply 

          for returning to school within the deadline, and if they do not return, they will be dis-enrolled. 

Dis-enrollment – Withdrawal(자퇴)

If you wish to withdraw from study at BUFS, you must immediately contact BUFS OIA to discuss the next procedure. BUFS OIA is bound to claim the start and termination of your study to the immigration office, where we need the date of your departure from Korea. If you are residing in dormitory in BUFS, you must also make sure to complete the move-out procedure, complying with your Dormitory office’s guidance.

1. If a student has a reason that meets the dis-enrollment requirements, he/she will be dis-enrolled.

– Non-registration dis-enrollment: In case of failure to register within the prescribed period of each semester

– Non-returning dis-enrollment: In case of failure to return to school in the prescribed semester of returned to the school

※ If a student want to get tuition refund, he/she should submit a copy of bank account in the name of a parent or a legal guardian and Family Relation Certificate to the Academic Administration Service Team.

Study Period Change (학기 변동)

If you wish to extend or shorten your study period at BUFS, contact BUFS OIA to discuss it. For any change in the study period, both home university and BUFS must approve it and not all request will be accepted. 

When the extension request is approved, you will be guided to extend your sojourn period at the immigration office.
